FL-10 - The Story of Samm Simpson

(x-posted from Kos)

I started posting diaries on Kos back in late March to help show support and draw attention to a local congressional candidate, Samm Simpson.  Phrases were thrown around by me and commentors like "purple district",  "18 term incumbent", "Grassroots support", I was overshadowed in my early diaries by stories of the day.  Be it Ned Lamont's campaign, be it one of the thousands of new outrages that the Current Occupier of the White House has bestowed upon us, etc...  Samm's campaign in Florida's 10th Congressional district has been overshadowed time and again when mentioned on Kos.

Florida and Congress, of course, are the hot button subject of the moment...  Unfortunately the focus is on FL-16 and not on other candidates that are in need of the netroots support.  I could make mention of Phyllis Busansky here but I believe she's good on her own because she's running against a Bush lapdog in FL-09.  More on the flipside

Samm, on the other hand, is running against C.W. "Bill" Young and hasn't gathered nearly as much attention as Busansky's race nationally (and online).  Where incumbents are in danger this year, Simpson's campaign has been brushed off and written off.

Let me borrow the words from Ultrageek's Florida diary to describe Samm Simpson for you:

FL-10 - St Petersburg.  The reddie incumbent, Bill Young, won this seat last time with 69% of the vote, although Kerry got 48%, so it's not as red as all that.  Our gal is Samm Simpson, and if there was ever a candidate that the Kossacks could get behind, it's the woman who writes, produces and hosts a local television series called "Media is Propaganda", which has been nominated for an Access Pinellas Award.  The district breaks down as 167k red, 152k blue and 101k independents.  She is pro-peace, pro-veteran, pro-balanced-budget, pro-health-care, pro-Union and pro-choice.  She also believes in three equal branches of government with strong checks and balances.  She has raised next to no money and is getting next to no media attention and the DCCC doesn't seem to care much about this either...
FL-10: The odds are that this seat is going to stay red, as purple as the district is, and we missed an opportunity to put a lefty in the House.

It's that last line that resonates the loudest.

Samm has raised less than $3000 online (using Act Blue as her general donation source) as of today (October 9th).  I realize that a wider casting net was most likely needed - more supporters posting more regularly about the campaign and what not - to get Kossack attention on this district and her campaign, but it's not over yet.  Not if we make a stand.

It's a seat with a big incumbent.  It's a seat in a swing-congressional district.  One outside force or another can sway this to the underdog...  And it's not going to take much to make C.W. Young another Foley Flu victim, but it will take a lot more than nothing to accomplish that.

Contribute now to Samm Simpson's campaign

My pleasure to make a pauper's contribution to such a cause.

It's more than a little sad to learn that such a lady with such a wonderfully clear voice for liberalism in the south is lost in the dust while many far less worthy and even some hard rightwingers get the lion's share of attention and money.

All the best,

Terry

Thanks Terry Sorry for the late reply on this - I've been out of town for a few days and away from the computer. I think part of the problem is Samm's campaign and not realizing just how far the Internet reaches with fundraising. They think locally and in pennies instead of nationally and dollars... Dollars that Samm desperately needs.
