FL-10: Opposites square off in a purple district

(x-posted at Daily Kos )

C.W. Bill Young, an engraved institution in congress since the 1970's - who represents Florida's 10th district, sits smugly above the fray of issues in Washington and the upcoming election in November.  With $400,000+ in his re-election coffers as of March 31st, he arrogantly dismisses both problems with the President as well as the low opinion of congress that the American people currently have:

Young, in a telephone interview from Washington, declined to discuss his opponent directly but said he's not especially worried about polls showing widespread public disenchantment with the president and Congress.

"Congress has always had a very low poll rating as long as I can remember, but most people really believe in their own representative," said Young, 75, who gently suggested the president should "demand more accountability" of agencies under his control.

This brings us to Samm Simpson - challenging Young for his congressional seat.  The same Samm Simpson who had to collect nearly 2500 petition signatures in less than 2 weeks, the same Samm Simpson who pulled it off and was approved for the November ballot.

Samm's the polar opposite of Young's dismissive arrogance, calling for a full investigation into the Bush administration:

"This is not about a person I'm running against; this is about an ideology that I believe is devastating our country. I believe it's very important that we do not have one-party rule in Washington," said Simpson, a former marketing executive from Dunedin who wants Congress to thoroughly investigate the Bush administration.

...

Simpson, 52, says Congress must investigate the Bush administration in a variety of arenas: "It's absolutely apparent to most Americans who read or seek the truth that the wiretapping is illegal, that we were lied to about the war. ... I believe Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush all need to be investigated."

It's obvious who's accepting of the status quo and who's inclined to hold the government accountable.

What it's up to now, is us.  There's an old stalwart sitting above the fray in an ivory tower who is not infallible - Fl-10 is very much a purple district as Al Gore won it in 2000 by 2 points and George Bush triumphed in 2004 by the same margin.  Young's claim to fame in the district is slinging pork while voting party line more often than not.  He is the poster boy for pork and Republican cronyism.

Samm Simpson needs support - both locally and the netroots.  Her ground game is set but the financial game pales in comparison.  Young will not even acknowledge Simpson's existence...  It'd sure be nice to give him a reason to.

Re: FL-10: Opposites in a purple district (none / 0)

What I like most about her is the fire in her eyes when she speaks.  She's got a nice pulpit populist thing going on, which leads me to one of the reasons I think she has a chance.

She's a born again Christian.  Don't freak out progressives; she's a Jimmy Carter kind of Christian who believes in broad seperation of church and state, and freedom of and from religion.  And while she wouldn't have an abortion herself and wouldn't counsil any woman to, she firmly believes that's a decision that's between a woman, her partner, and her god; that government should play no role in the decision.

She's also a fiscal conservative in that she's strongly in favor of balanced budgets.

She sees that her district could be a leader in alternative energy development, recognizes that tourism is vital to the region, and that this income is dependent upon clean beaches that will be endangered by oil drilling off of the coast.

She's pro affordable health care in a district with a huge number of retirees who are ready to burn someone at the stake over the drug bill, rising insurance costs, and shrinking benefits in general.

She's got a good ground game started up, but of course, very little money.  Comes with being a regular gal who hasn't spent most of her adult life hanging out at the Country Club.

She's a 52 year old grandmother who is a real person who recongnises the real problems facing ordinary people and the real change that's going to have to take place if we're going to prevent the middle class from shrinking into oblivion.
